Invictus

In honour of finally watching Star Wars Episode II and in response to a post from [livejournal.com profile] minxyminou  earlier, I present to you the entire plot of Attack of the Clones in five seconds.

I was up for a run this morning with Coffee Snob and Boyfriend of Coffee Snob.  I was challenged to jump from pillar to pillar a la Parkour.  I'm not one to decline a challenge but I'm not going to come to do some of the things they can do.

It was a lazy day today, and I wore my Mr Lazy t-shirt.  There was another day of candidate training that I didn't have to attend, but I was going to go and show my face there for a bit, but I just couldn't be bothered so I stayed home until it was time to join [livejournal.com profile] bakerypenguin  to see Invictus.  The first place was sold out so we meandered throught the multicultural festival.  I had Korean food, Greek beer (just to say I've had one) and Greek coffee which was strong and thick and should keep me awake for the next week or so.

We eventually got into a theatre showing it, and we were quite impressed that the rugby in the show rang true.  Even the captain shouting at the players to "hit the f*cking guy and help will come" sounded like the exhortations that I have heard, and on occasion given in a game.  We also laughed at the guy who said "I try not to think, it gets in the way of my rugby" and the guy who declined to sleep with his girlfriend the night before a match, saying "I can't.  I've got to stay angry."

We would have advised Mandela's security team to take off their firearms before playing rugby though.

A chat about identity and military service over tea rounded out the evening.  She seems to think I would fit military culture better than I do.  Still no answers.

Now watching The Thin Red Line.  The jungle, the hills, and the natives remind me of Kokoda.

Dinner last night was had with [livejournal.com profile] bakerypenguin .  At the gym this evening I was 1kg heavier than I was yesterday.  Damn!  That was some filling chicken.

We got a note from WT today concerned that a lot of correspondence had not had a response.  Luckily I've kept the correspondence I've cleared and looked through a massive stack of it to confirm that yes I had either responded or determined that no further action was needed given that our receptionist had given an acknowledgement.  Most of the outstanding corro was e-mails that needed no response.

I know people who are exceptional at what they do.  I can be exceptional at my job, and I do have moments, but overall I feel like I don't get enough done.  I seem to get things that are asked of me done, but being adequate is kind of unsatisfying.  Maybe I have to find a way to focus so I have exceptional moments more often.  Something for the new year?  (Then again, I don't do resolutions.)

TW: 50 Bench Press (getting someone to spot me can take WAY too long), 100 dips (40 weighted), 150 dumbell shoulder press.  A bit of soreness from yesterday's 300 workout, but not a lot.  I think the holidays will see a lot of beach runs.

I was shopping for Christmas gifts yesterday. I find it hard to buy gifts at times. I don't want to buy something generic and meaningless, but I think I managed to find something good for my nieces. I wanted to get them something they couldn't get in Canada and something that was undeniably from me.

And so...

The two on the bottom are for my nieces. Aged 4 and 6, they will fit into these for a while as they are size 8. I am pretty sure they will be the only ones they know with Brumbies gear, and the rugby angle means they will know it came from me. Now I wonder if I should put numbers on them. I did that when Julie, my eldest niece, was about a month old. I put the number zero on the back of a very small England football top.

Oh yes, the other two are for [livejournal.com profile] bakerypenguin to give to burgeoning Canberra rugby fans. It's never too early to get them following the right sport.

The set top box has been returned and the money refunded. There may have been a simple explanation but I couldn't be bothered working it out to be frank. I told dad when he rang that a new TV would eventually be needed and he agreed.

Cupcake Goddess plied me with baked goods to fortify me for my drive back to Canberra. She bakes very well. She said she would do some baking for the people I've invited to the Collaroy Castle next weekend. She also invited me to spend Christmas with her family so I won't be a Christmas orphan. We will likely be volunteering at the Wayside Chapel in King's Cross though, which will be good. I had been thinking about that.

I went into church for the evening Eucharist at St John's Reid. There were about seven or eight there. Nothing superfluous. I seem to be doing much better with services when they are small and stripped down of anything I tend to find annoying. Message from the sermon, if you are a tax collector, be a tax collector. But be an ethical tax collector. It's not about chaning what you do, as much as doing what you do better.
