This election "bill" seems to be a catalyst prodding me to think about career changes again.

Last Friday I considered a radical career change that I am surprised had never struck me before.  This would not be in politics.  It would be the first non white-collar job I had done in a very long time.

I thought about joining the fire brigade.

A lot of kids want to be firefighters.  When I was five there was a very minor fire in my mum's oven, and I ran to the closet and put on my rubber boots and raincoat, then dashed outside and got the garden hose.  Luckily mum intervened to stop me, and I didn't think about it again for 28 years.  But last week the thought crossed my mind (I'm not sure how or why) and there seems to be plenty of positives to it.

I had a look at the recruitment section of the NSW Fire Brigade website and I'm pretty sure I could handle the job.  I also saw the physical requirements and the obstacle course they put recruits through as part of the process, and it looked like fun.  I'd like to have a crack at their Physical Aptitude Test even if I didn't join up!

It would be a pretty big change from what I do now, but I think it is certainly worth considering.  It's the first job I've thought of in quite a while that hasn't seemed entirely negative.  I'm not saying I will definately do it, but at the moment I am hard pressed to think of a reason not to try it.

I kind of get the feeling that there would be a level of satisfaction in being able to say "someone is alive because of me" rather than being able to say "some loudmouth got to shoot his mouth off because of me."

If nothing else, I hear chicks dig firefighters.

This certainly warrants further investigation, probably after I get back from my holiday.

Like I said, I can't believe this didn't cross my mind earlier.

Chicks DO dig firemen...and you get awesome boots.

I could see you doing that job.

Everyone I've told so far seems to think it would be a good fit. I thought a drastic change of scene would be unlikely but maybe it would work.

Oh wow, this is brilliant. A light went on when you posted this. Plus: tons of downtime means tons of working-out that actually helps you in your job.

I know. It just seems to fit, and it's certainly worth considering. I think I would prefer this to being a trainer.

I think so. I told my parents about my idea this weekend and they seemed to agree there may be merit to it.
