Since then I've been doing a lot of studying for my training qualifications, watching the Boxing Day Test (which was an outstanding back and forth affair that was finely balanced and could have gone either way until very late) visiting the beach, and having very little personal contact.  That's suiting me fine this time.  There is no feeling of isolation, in part because I have plenty on the horizon.

It turns out I've got the whole house to myself this weekend.  And it turns out that I am exploiting that.

Last night I happened by JB Hifi and picked up some DVDs as they had a sale on.  My attempts at manification of our DVD collection in this case consisted of bringing home Godfather III (I've heard it's not that good but I've already got the first two), Inglorious Basterds, and Fight Club in addition to Office Space which is an appropriate film (in some ways) for me at the moment.  Last night I was up late with the heat on in only one room watching films with the sound up and eating more than I should have.

Today I watched a bit more, and interspersed that with stepping out onto the back deck to play some back deck cricket on my own.  Smashing a ball into an area where I knew I wouldn't lose it or break anything was very satifying.  I made some good shots.  Some square cuts, some flicks off the legs, and plenty of drives down the ground.  Of course I never really got good at cricket, but this afternoon I got to imagine myself as Don Bradman.

I also watched Fight Club again, and it seems to be a good time to do so.  Halfway through, it stirred me up sufficiently to make me want to put on a singlet and rugby shorts and run down to the gym in the cold of a Canberra winter.  I found myself quoting lines from the show during the run, but I don't think anyone heard me saying "I'm a space monkey ready to be shot into space" or saw me hitting my head as I ran.  A Fight Club style haircut is on the cards tonight.

My time at the gym was spent sampling out plenty of exercises to see how they made my neck feel.  It's still a bit stiff and it does limit being able to do some things at higher weight or high reps, but even riskier things like kettlebell swings, full pullups from a dead hang, and half clean and press with a bar were fine (at least in small doses.)  I've been really keen to get back to the gym.  A few days off are always tough to take.

It's been a dehumanised day, but I'm in a good mood when it comes to people.  On my run, fueled perhaps by endorphins at last, I decided while looking around that this is a good day to be alive, and I enjoyed talking harmlessly to the eye candy at the gym.

It's election day tomorrow for New South Wales.  I've not voted yet but I will do either today or tomorrow.  I am enrolled at Collaroy in what will be a pretty onesided race, but a friend of mine is in line for an upper house seat (basically the state senate for my American friends) and I intend to vote in such a way as will maximise the vote she gets.

Then we will see what happens with the almost certain change in government and the turnover in new jobs that will result.

DBYW: AMRAP 7 Minutes - Run 400m, then in remaining time 7 SDHP, 7 shoulder press both at 30kg.  9 rounds, 7 SDHP and 1 shoulder press.  AMRAP 7 Minutes - 7 toes to bar, 15 sit ups.  4 rounds, 7 toes to bar, 1 sit up (man those toes to bar are TOUGH!)  AMRAP 7 minutes - Lunge walk 20 steps, 10 burpees.  4 rounds, 1 lunge step.

YW: 5 rounds - 20 clean and press, 20 pushups, 20 bicep curls 35kg, row 20 calories.  Then 20 consecutive heavy bag get ups.  They now have a 30kg heavy bag which is more than twice as tough as the 15kg bag.

Alleluia has been sick this past week and has surrounded herself with DVDs and days off.  She is now strangely fixated on The West Wing, a program that I never got into as much as many political people I know who obsessed about it, but which I am enjoying.

Australia is out of the Cricket World Cup, and I've not seen a single match.  A decade ago I would have watched every match I could, but now I can't be bothered, at least not with this tournament.

And finally, the song that has been stuck in my head today is...

Good news:  A place will be showing on Monday that would be suitable.  Not too far from town, four bedrooms, and best of all, it's being handled by the same agent who handles our current house and is sympathetic to our plight and aware of our reliability as renters.  I think we would stand a very good chance at getting it, and I almost think they would be hard pressed not to give it to us.  It's even cheaper than our current place, though one of the girls is reluctant to live in a place with the decor that this place has.

Kind of daggy, sure, but I can live with it.  Decor is very low on my list of criteria.

I've got legs that are a bit sore from my running and rowing yesterday, but I will rest today and should be fine for the mud run tomorrow.

Australia will not be hosting the World Cup as some people hoped.  Most people have greeted the news with a shrug.  I'm not at all disappointed.  In fact, if we had won, I suspect soccer fans would spend the next twelve years being utterly insufferable.  A work colleague described soccer as being the sporting equivalent of the Greens.  Morally self righteous and assured of it's own importance, but only 10% of the populace can be roused to support it.

I'm perfectly happy having the cricket on, even though Australia somehow managed to lose two wickets (including a run out) in the first over.

The political nerd in me will now have a go.

A few work issues aside, today I was more or less consumed by a desire to get justice from Qantas and American Airlines for the frequent flyer points and status credits they have refused to give me.

I just sent the following e-mail to American Airlines explaining the situaiton in what I think is calm and measured language.

I think I struck the right note.

Additionally, I suspect that I am not likely to earn 300 status credits to put me into the Gold level with Qantas by the end of February given that some work travel has been delayed until after that time.  Flying to Mildura this weekend for the Victorian election would give me some, but not enough, and I would find myself taking flights I didn't need to take and gratuitously spending money just to chase something that is nice but not a necessity.

Luckily, sometimes Qantas offers double status credits in the late stages of the frequent flyer year to people who look like they might come up short in an effort to convince them to fly.  If I am offered this, it's a whole new ball game.

Listen Qantas, I'm not willing to chase Gold status in itself.  It was always stupid to take flights I wouldn't otherwise take and it's just taken a little while to remind myself of this fact.  But I do fly a lot and I will continue to fly a lot, so if you are willing to give me a hand, I am willing to take it.

Of course, if you're not, or if you want to continue to shaft me over my missing frequent flyer points in America or the ones you refused to grant me last year when I flew to Papua New Guinea, then you can get stuffed.

Oh I can be stubborn when I feel like I've been wronged.

The Cricket has started again with Peter Siddle taking a hat trick on his birthday in the first Ashes Test against the Poms at the Gabba.  (Extra points to anyone who understands what that sentence means.)

We're off to dinner courtesy of W and his wife for Christmas in a little bit.

Damn.  Bloody LiveJournal ate my post about going to the cricket.

Here are the main points.

1) Dad enjoyed being at the cricket with me rather than He Crow.
2) Dad is also a bit frustrated having guests at the Collaroy Castle.  Why they invited He Crow and She Crow in the first place remains uncertain.
3) I enjoy cricket, I used to play, but it was never going to be my game.  I haven't got the fine motor skills (or patience) for it.  I much prefer playing games that involve running around and hitting things.
4) We had a few beers in our box whilst wathcing the antics of the yobbos on the opposite side of the ground chanting, batting around beach balls, waving a banner that strangely enough read "BANNER", and watching a man in a Santa suit being led away by police.  This kind of behaviour is kind of amusing at the cricket, even thought it would annoy me under other circumstances.
5) We were less impressed by the antics of the Australian batsmen.

Back to work tomorrow.

That is all.
